Frank Hornby’s company wasn’t initially named directly after Frank’s surname. In its place, Hornby started a small manufacturing company he named Meccano Ltd. in 1908 and the Meccano trademark began which immediately became a success in less than two years.
Seven years before the establishment of Meccano, Hornby applied for a patent he called “Improvements in Toy or Educational Devices for Children and Young People” which was consist of models of trucks, cranes, and other models derived from construction equipments. The unique characteristic that Hornby’s scale models has is the interchangeability of parts that other toys of the time didn’t have. Later on, “Mechanics Made Easy” became the later name for Hornby’s model scale lineups. This is the type of innovative thinking Hornby products is famous for which also given model trains assorted but standard scale measurements.
Fabrication of model toys by Meccano continued even with the onset of World War I. Further model train lineups was introduced by Hornby in 1920 which had clockwork motors imported from a German company known as Marklin which also manufactured Meccano products under license in Germany. Hornby’s production of model trains, however, was suspended throughout World War II. Production resumed when the war ended but production of model trains under the Meccano brand name stopped.
Hornby introduced 100-250 volts electric-powered model trains in 1925 which was soon after changed to six volts DC for safety’s sake. The 00 scale model trains powered with a DC 12 volt motor were then introduced during the 1930s and is now the most prevalent kind of scale in the UK.
Hornby Railways also created the Skaledale and Lyddle End which are their two main railroading models. Although both have similarities when it comes to accessories, the Skaledale is considerably much smaller than the Lyddle End model which is 1:76 scale. These two main models are modeled after specific places in England. A large amount of these models consist of sceneries and buildings meticulously looked at from the two areas.
All over the world, Hornby model trains are well known. Mainly countries in Europe, North America, and Australia.
During the 1920s, Hornby’s attempt to create a site in the United States was not as successful as other Hornby sites in Europe. Although, during the same era, a business venture aimed toward the US did not turn out satisfactory for Hornby because of inadequate product attributes and the stock market crash of 1929.
